Lule Saami 1 (LU1) is a study program that provides a basic introduction to Lule Saami language and literature, and it consists of two courses: Lule Saami Language 1 and Saami Literature.

This study program gives a systematic introduction to Lule Saami phonology, morphology and syntax. Students learn to be able to use basic concepts and terminology to analyze and describe Lule Saami grammar. Lule Saami 1 (LU1) also provides information about the language's position in society, as well as about multilingualism.

It also gives students a general introduction to Saami literature. Students will become acquainted with folklore, especially older Saami folklore. In addition, they will learn about specific narrative traditions, with an emphasis on early Lule Saami oral traditions. This includes myths, epic joik poetry, legends, fairy tales and proverbs.

Learning outcomes

The students are given the basis for being able to acquire

  • practical and theoretical knowledge in and about the Saami language
  • a functional and good language proficiency
  • an independent relationship with the subject, and a basis for further learning and development
  • basic literary knowledge and knowledge of Saami folklore 
General study skills with at least Saami as a second language at the high school level or satisfactory completion of the university's courses Introduction to Lule Saami 1 and Introduction to Lule Saami 2.
Saami languages are increasingly used in more and more areas of society, and Saami municipalities, Saami institutions and other institutions will need employees with good Saami language skills. This study program provides knowledge and insight that will be applicable in many contexts, such as teaching, cultural work, management, media and tourism. There is especially a need for Lule Saami teachers, and this study program can help to provide teachers with fundamental knowledge of Lule Saami language and grammar.
Lule Saami 1 (LU1) is the first module in a Lule Saami bachelor program, and it provides students with the opportunity to continue with Lule Saami 2 (LU2).
Bodø/Drag. This study program consists of 3-4 gatherings during the semester. The gatherings will generally take place at Ájluokta, Divtasvuodna/Hábmer (Drag, Tysfjord/Hamarøy).

No tuition fees. Costs for semester registration and course literature apply.

Students should expect costs to incur in relation to sessions at Drag or elsewhere.

The study program is evaluated annually by students using course evaluation questionnaires/surveys and by the program director. The evaluations are included in the university's quality assurance system.
